Speaking in the most natural sense, an air compressor is a tool that increases the amount of air in any given space. As it packs in the air, air pressure increases, creating a force that is used in a variety of way, from industrial and manufacturing to commercial uses, and sometimes even personal purposes.The concept of the air compressor is taken from the original air compressor – the lungs. As you make a deep breath to blow a candle, you increase the air pressure in the lung, which uses the pressurized air to put out the flame of the candle.
Air compressors are categorized into two general types – positive displacement compressors, and dynamic air compressors.Positive displacement air compressors used the same concept as that of the lungs – as it works by filling in a chamber with air, and then emptying it. There are three common types of positive displacement compressors. These are reciprocating compressors, rotary screw compressors and rotary sliding vane air compressors.
The dynamic air compressor, however, uses a slightly different concept in pressurizing air. The dynamic compressor uses a rotary device to increase and decrease air speed – controlling the chamber’s air pressure through air velocity.
Air compressors have found its way into the large production market as it has a lot of use for compressed air. It can be used to change chemical compositions as in the case of fertilizers. Compressed air is used in manufacturing large number of products such as high speed industrial printing. However, the most common and well known use of air compressors is in the use of tools like nail guns, staplers, spray guns and wrenches. Acting as a blower, air compressors are also used to clean the work area.
